The Life Practice Council oversees the Academy's public policy work on life insurance issues. The council manages the work of its committees, subcommittees, and work groups. The Academy's vice president for life insurance issues heads the council and serves on the Academy Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

Committees Release White Paper on Hedging & Risk Management

The Risk Management and Financial Reporting Council’s (RMFRC) Financial Reporting Committee, ERM/ORSA Committee, and the Life Practice Council’s Life GAAP Reporting Committee released a white paper, Hedging and Risk Management. The paper examines how insurance companies—life, health, or property and casualty—employ similar techniques to manage insurance risk. It uses life insurance management of mortality risk to illustrate examples and describes capital markets’ risks and how companies have adopted hedging as a risk management tool.

It also provides sources of information on how to develop reasonable assumptions regarding GLB withdrawals.

Cross-Practice Letter on NY Proposed Circular on AIS and ECDIS in Insurance Underwriting and Pricing

The Academy’s Health, Life, and Casualty practice councils submitted comments on New York State Department of Financial Services’ proposed insurance circular letter on the use of Artificial Intelligence Systems (AIS) and External Consumer Data and Information Sources (ECDIS) in insurance underwriting and pricing. The councils support efforts to curb underwriting and pricing methods that “reflect systemic biases and can reinforce and exacerbate inequality.”
